PELLA DROPS IN 22 AGAINST WASHBURN

Story Courtesy of Champlin Park Basketball Blog

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

CP 77 - Washburn 76 (OT)

The Rebels jump out to a 15-8 lead with all five starters scoring. The Millers go on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 17-14. The Millers ball pressure seems to be giving the Rebels trouble as they look to settle down.

With the score 30-29 with about a minute left before the half Davis leaks out and goes in for an apparent breakaway layup when a Miller player runs him down and from some angles it looks like an undercut and intentional foul. The refs don’t see it this way as Davis makes 1 of 2 free throws for a Rebel 31-29 lead. The Rebels add another free throw for a 32-29 lead. Duberry takes a couple of hard shots and falls, plays limited minutes and goes into the locker room looking query.

Washburn knocks down two 3 pointers and the Rebels go into a 1-3-1 zone. Pella answers with a 3 of his own as the Rebels lead 37-35 and Washburn calls timeout with 14 minutes to play. The Millers return to the floor and proceed to knock down four wide open 3 pointers against the Rebels 1-3-1 zone and take the lead and look as if they are ready to blow this one open.

The Rebels go back to their man to man defense and claw back into the game with four straight defensive stops. Zimmermann is fouled going to the basket and makes 1 of 2 free throws to cut the Miller lead to 55-54 with 5 minutes left.

The Rebels regain the lead 61-59 on a Williamson put back with 3 minutes left in the game. On a loose ball that sends Duberry and the Miller’s Thomas hard to the floor the call goes against Duberry who struggles to get back up, Thomas makes both free throws and the Rebels lead 62-61. This is the 3rd straight questionable call that goes the Millers way, timeout Washburn.

With the score tied at 67 with a minute left, Duberry is fouled and proceeds to miss both free throws. The Millers come down and don’t convert, rebound and timeout Rebels with 37 seconds left. The Rebels score and the Millers answer with 3 seconds left, 69 all, timeout Rebels. Duberry speeds the ball up court and kicks out to Zimmermann who misses a 3 point attempt from the left side, OT here we come.

The Rebels win the tap as Pella attacks the basket and is fouled, he makes 1 of 2. The Millers don’t score as Zimmermann is fouled and makes 1 of 2 for a 71-69 CP lead. The teams traded baskets; Walker’s steal leads to another 1 of 2 free throws from Pella, 75-74 CP with 29 seconds left. Williamson with a HUGE put back and the Rebels look like this one might be over with seconds left. The Rebels play great defense on the perimeter and don’t allow the Millers a 3 point shot look as they make a two foot basket with 2 seconds left in the game. In a game full of twist, the Rebels were able to hold on or should I say hold off the Millers for the win in overtime 77-76.

The Rebels have four starters in double digits with Pella leading the way with a season high 22 points as they extend their winning streak to 2 games and are now 3-2.

The Box:
Davis 16
Duberry 14
Gibson 2
Hager 2
Pella 22
Williamson 4
Zimmerman 17

Of Note:

  • The Rebels were 27 of 41 from the free throw line.
  • Duberry who played sparingly after his two hard crashes to the floor doesn’t look probable for tomorrow’s championship game
  • The Rebels second OT game this year
  • Williamson's 4 points were the Rebels BIGGEST points of the game
  • Zimmermann shoots 17 free throws
  • Pella goes 8 for 10 from the line (some huge ones in OT)

PELLA PUTS IN 16 AT HOME OPENER!

JOSH PELLA gets a strong start to Champlin Parks season opener. Pella sets the tone with a steal in the first play of the game. Zimmermann finishes high scorer with 23, Pella with 16 and Duberry with 11. Pella was a defensive monster for most of the game. Will post stats as soon as they are available and game tape after it's edited.

Next stop is Minnetonka on December 11th. It should be an exciting night of basketball as Minnetonka is rated 2nd in preseason and has a talented group of guys!

CHAMPLIN PARK'S HOME OPENER

CHAMPLIN PARK OPENS 2009-10 SEASON AT HOME AGAINST MOUNDSVIEW HS.

Pella and CPHS Rebels are jacked up and wide eyed to get started. With heavy preseason pressure to produce, the Rebels are up for the challenge. With a busy week ahead they will be tested early on . Tonight they take on the Moundsview Mustangs at 7pm. There's a storm a brewing across the state and travel might be difficult. Head out early.

On Friday Dec 11th, the Rebels face 2nd ranked Minnetonka HS with highly recruited shooters like Cole Stefan, Tor Anderson and explosive wing Leonard Glass who was a team mate of Pella's over the summer with 43 HOOPS.

Saturday Dec 12th the water gets deeper with the Rebels taking on Cretin-Derham-Hall. Ranked higher than the Rebels, CDH has 3 big men including Elliot Owusu and Clay Horne, not to mention Seantrel Henderson. Champlin will have their hands full with strong guard play also. Pella also played with Owusu and Horne on 43 HOOPS.

Even though the stakes are high, Pella is ready to go. "I've been waiting since last March to get busy! We were very disappointed to lose the game against Cooper and we won't stop at anything." The team looked good over the past 2 weekends as they participated in scrimmages at Monticello and at BSM where they took on #1 rated Hopkins. Champlin looked strong and did not show any signs of intimidation! They are physically and mentally ready to get it on! Champlin is scheduled to play Hopkins on Jan 9th 2010 at the Target Center.

Watch this week for game results!

Ending match play in Chicago

FROM TC HOOPS:

Pool play concludes here in Chicago with MN taking over 3 of the 4 courts for the mid-morning session. PNR 16s defeated Playground Elite 16s 65-61. Shelby Moats with 24 points (4-4 3s) and 6 rebounds in arguably his best performance of the spring/summer. That was in front of some interested coaches too. Alex Richter with 17 points. Also of note is the possible return of Jonah Travis for the PNR tourney. Good signs today, tomorrow will tell more. They were 2-1 in the 3 games I know about. Don't know how they did against the Mac Irvin 16s.PNR 17s lost to the Illinois Warriors 61-48 and the Warriors were up bigger than that. Dyami Starks left the team last night. That also meant they were without Steve Tecker. That PNR team will be a big story of their own tourney. There appears to be some significant chaos in that organization right now. They finish up 1-3 here in Chicago.

43 Hoops Harris took on Rising Stars Gold in the 3rd game. Ohio State commit Lenzelle Smith back with the Rising Stars for this one along with talented teammate Rayvonte Rice. 15-14 Harris in the 1st half before they come across a famous scoring drought. Rising Stars finishes the half on a 15-5 run to lead 29-20 at the break. Rice with 8 in the half. 43 extends the defense to start the 2nd half and they come back. A steal leads to a big Elliot Owusu dunk to cut the lead to 4. Brett Ervin with a layup at 11:15 and 43 is back to even at 35. Ervin with a tip in to tie the game at 50 and then a dunk to tie the game at 52 with 1:35 left. Smith huge in the 2nd half and he counters with a 3 point play with 1:08 left. 55-52 Rising Stars. Vinard Birch with a layup to cut the lead to 1. Smith 1 of 2 FTs with 18.8 left. Out of a timeout, Birch drives and is fouled. He converts both FTs with 6.3 left and we'll go to OT tied at 56. Clay Horne with a tip in with 10.6 left in the 1st OT to tie the game again. To double OT tied at 60. Birch with a couple of nice hoops in the 2nd OT, Smith surprisingly doesn't convert a pair of chances down the stretch and Manani Beavers seals the win with a pair of FTs. 66-62 43 Hoops wins. Brett Ervin with all 12 of his points in the 2nd half. Definitely his best game of this tournament. Birch with 10 huge points. Elliot Owusu continues to impress despite getting ridiculously tough defensive assignments (he had to try and slow down Smith in this one). Smith finishes with 14 of his 21 points in the 2nd half. Rising Stars during the spring was regarded as possibly the best team here in Illinois and they went 0-3 vs Minnesota in their own building. Definitely a different team today vs yesterday as Ben Brust hardly got any touches in this one (yes 43s defense deserves credit for that too)

43 HOOPS HARRIS TEAM UPDATE FROM THE CHICAGO SUMMER CLASSIC

43 HARRIS WINS ON FRIDAY, SPLITS ON SATURDAY AND WILL PLAY AGAIN ON SATURDAY MORINING. THEN IT'S OFF TO MILWAUKEE NY2LA TOURNAMENT.

WILL UPDATE ON SUNDAY HOW THE WEEKEND WRAPS UP. STAY TUNED IN.

THE CLASSIC WAS LOADED WITH COLLEGE COACHES:

Day 1 Of The Chicago Summer Classic Opens Very Strong As Some Of The Top Travel Teams In The Country Hit The Floor, And Better Than 200 College Coaches Stream Through The Doors Chicago HoopsJuly 10, 2009 Email Questions/Comments To brian@chicagohoops.com

Day 1 of the Chicago Summer Classic opened very strong as some of the top travel teams in the United States hit the floor. Better than 200 college coaches came through the doors on Day 1 including a long line of high-profile head coaches from around the country. Thad Matta (Ohio State), Rick Pitino (Louisville), Bruce Weber (Illinois), Greg McDermott (Iowa State), Bill Carmody (Northwestern), Todd Lickliter (Iowa), Jerry Wainwright (DePaul), John Beilein (Michigan), Mike Montgomery (California), Herb Sendek (Arizona State), Mick Cronin (Cincinnati), Jim Boylen (Utah), Jim Les (Bradley), David Carter (Nevada), Mark Phelps (Drake), Jim Whitesell (Loyola), Ray McCallum (Detroit), Gene Cross (Toledo), Ricardo Patton (Northern Illinois), Saul Phillips (North Dakota State), Jim Molinari (Western Illinois), Mike Miller (Eastern Illinois), Jeff Neubauer (Eastern Kentucky), Lennox Forrester (Southern Illinois-Edwardsville), Bill Sall (Ferris State), Luke Reigel (Wisconsin-Parkside), Scott Trost (Lewis), Marty Bell (Quincy) and Dan Andersen (Northeast Nebraska) were all among the head coaches that took in the action on Day 1.

A number of players enhanced their recruiting stock greatly with strong efforts on Day 1. Several thrilling games highlighted the day including a heart-stopping overtime win by 15-U Mean Streets over 15-U Team NLP in a contest that featured three of the top Class of 2012 point guard prospects in Illinois in Jaleni Neely (Chicago Simeon) of Mean Streets, and Keith Carter (Proviso East) and Aaron Simpson (North Chicago) of Team NLP. Neely was magnificent as Mean Streets held on for the overtime win after Carter drilled a three-point basket at the end of regulation to send the game to overtime. Action will continue again today at 8:00 a.m. Today's games again figure to be nothing short of sensational as pool play continues, and a number of high-profile match-ups are also on tap including a highly anticipated showdown between the Mac Irvin Fire and Florida-based powerhouse Team Stat with features Brandon Knight and Austin Rivers.

43 HOOPS HARRIS OUT EARLY AT OHIO

Disappointed by lackluster performance 43 HOOPS 17u Harris team goes out in the first round at the ADIDAS IT TAKES 5IVE Tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio this week. The team had very high expectations for themselves and came up short losing their last game by 3 points. "We just didn't play up to our ability and we are not used to early defeat" said Josh Pella shooting guard for 43 HOOPS and Champlin Park High School, MN. "Our plan was to destroy in pool play and finish strong in the top bracket".

43 HOOPS now moves on to the Chicago Summer Classic in Deerfield, IL. Next is NY2LA in Milwaukee, Las Vegas Super 64 and finishes the live period of July at the KC Prep Invitational in Kansas.
